How to Create a Blog Post Template in Squarespace

This tutorial is going to show you how to create a template for a blog post inside Squarespace. Keep in mind that this is more of a mini “hack” – unfortunately Squarespace doesn’t have this functionality officially but keep reading to see how I figured out how to make a template anyways!

Create the Template

To do this you’re going to need to jump into your main blog section from the Home Menu. Once you’re there, use the plus icon to add a new post – this is where we’re going to format your template. (You can also use an existing blog post if you like the way it’s laid out – if so, you can simply duplicate the Blog post and continue to Step Two.)

Now that you’ve created a new post, start adding the items that you’d like to include on every blog post. For me, this is my Affiliate Disclaimer, my Opt-In Gift, my Related Posts section and my Sidebar.

These sections are included on every blog post I create because they’re vital to retaining and growing my audience. For example, the Opt-In Gift is a freebie offered to readers if they sign up to my email list.

Growing an email list is SUPER important, because they’re the type of audience you actually own and have much more control over what they see from you.

Your email list is the key to selling services and products! Having this section on every blog posts gets as many eyes as possible on my freebie and allows me to grow my list much faster.

Some other things you may like to include on your blog post template are small disclaimers, legal statements and other things that need to appear on every blog post.

2. Save as a Template

To save your blog post, go ahead and schedule your blog post to “publish” at a date waaay in the future. I like to go at least a year ahead of time, as that gives me plenty of time to adjust the date as it approaches.

This blog post will never actually be published – in fact, it’ll just be continually rescheduled for a date far in the future. The reason for this? Your blog post template will always appear at the TOP of your main blog menu.

You’ll be able to access it easily whenever you need to create a new blog post on Squarespace using the template.

3. Use the Template

The key here is to make sure you duplicate the blog post before using it. Otherwise you’re going to write over the blog post template you just created and spoil your efforts!

To duplicate to a blog post, click on the cog in the upper right corner of the page. (In Squarespace 7.0, hover over your blog post and click “edit.”)

There’s a button at the bottom of the Content section that allows you to duplicate the blog post. Once you’ve clicked this, a new one will appear and you’ll be able to write your blog post from there.

Yay! You just made your first blog post template in Squarespace.
